Babies Are A Swimmin!
Updated: Jun 2, 2020
Last week we received a shipment of babies. Yes babies, baby tilapia! They come all the way from New Mexico....in a box. Fry, as they are referred to, come in at about 1" in length and they weigh less than a gram. I'm sure you're wondering what we would be doing with them. In an aquaponics system, they are our fertilizer, at least most of it and we get them in about every 4-6 weeks. We have 9 different sizes of tilapia in our greenhouse fertilizing our water so that our plants can thrive. Actually, the nutrients come from the food the fish eat so we feed them a very high quality nutritious diet. However, the fish are just the carrier that helps to breakdown the fish food. From there, we rely on bacteria to do the rest. They show up naturally and start working immediately. The bacteria break the food down the remainder of the way into minerals the plants need. And that is what makes aquaponics work so well!
